I created the calm corner for my former students. I spent a few years teaching early literacy before starting graduate school. In Larry Speck’s Architectural Theory class, we were tasked with writing an architectural manifesto and then doing or creating something that demonstrates our architectural values. The calm corner is my attempt to create a space of care for my former students to go and read. After interviewing the class of first graders about what made them feel calm and safe, I worked to create a small and comforting space for them that was “a little bit dark.”
